Every Spotlight Delaware story is now available to read online in the three most-spoken languages in Delaware: English, Spanish and Haitian Creole.
In addition, Spotlight Delaware reporters are now producing video recaps of the week’s news in both English and Spanish, with videos published to a number of social media platforms and in the Spotlight Delaware newsletter every Friday. A new Facebook page, Spotlight Delaware en Español, will feature Spanish-language versions of Spotlight stories.
It’s all part of an ongoing effort to make Spotlight Delaware reporting as accessible as possible to all Delaware residents, said Publisher & CEO Allison Taylor Levine.
Launched in March 2024, Spotlight Delaware focuses on covering public policy and how it affects the daily lives of Delawareans throughout the state, with a particular emphasis on communities that have not always had easy access to local news and information.
“We started Spotlight Delaware with the idea that everyone who lives in Delaware should have access to high-quality local news and information,” Levine said. “Now, our multilingual staff is communicating directly with our Spanish-speaking audience, while we’re taking advantage of new technology that allows for translations at scale.”
Director of Community Engagement David Stradley and Reporter José Ignacio Castañeda Perez spent months meeting with members of Delaware’s Spanish-speaking community – from community centers in Sussex County to the sidelines of soccer fields – to learn more about how and where people get their news. Many expressed an interest in video updates, and Facebook emerged as the key platform partner.
“I’m excited to bring vital news and information to all Delawareans in their native language,” Castañeda said.
